About
The first question a farmer asks? "Are you from a farming background?"
The answer is YES, I was bought up on a family beef and sheep farm in rural Leicestershire. Upon leaving Brooksby I embarked on a career training and riding point to point horses. After a serious knee injury which put an end to that I turned my attentions back to agriculture. Working freelance I split my year into three, lambing 1200 ewes in the spring, driving a baler for 'Eurobale' in the summer and then onto bulk grain lorries in the winter, never a dull moment!
I started working for SAI Global as a FABBL inspector to 'fill in the gaps' in 2006, training on more and more schemes I ended up covering, beef, lamb, crops, organic, UFAS and FIAS schemes, extending my work to pretty much full time.
After a move to Lincolnshire and two children later I decided that travelling the country auditing was not going to be practical so I decided to set up my own freelance business bookkeeping and preparing local farms for their audits.
Now with the remote systems in place, tax digital, two growing children and 100 breeding ewes of my own, I have found solutions which enables me to work from home the majority of the time but still ensuring my clients needs are met.
I have been privileged to meet some very different and inspiring characters within my career, farmers are certainly a 'different breed,' I believe that standards in farming are a good thing and in this climate they are certainly here to stay, I am sure there is a part of all of us that would like to wind back the clock to farm how our grandfathers farmed before us, but things change and for good or for bad we have to change with it. I believe I can work with most farmers who do not wish to or just have not got the time to embrace the technology that is becoming necessary to keep up with the ever changing standards.
